For the first time, a domestically produced large-scale model has appeared on a global flagship phone: the MiniCPM is installed in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 series.

Samsung unveiled three new foldable smartphones last night at its Galaxy Unpacked event in London: the Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip8. Today, Mianbi Intelligent announced that its MiniCPM series of on-device large-scale models deeply empowers Samsung's Galaxy AI – marking the first time a domestically produced on-device large-scale model has entered the global flagship product line of a leading international smartphone manufacturer.

According to the introduction, Mianbi Intelligent provides Samsung's Galaxy AI with on-device model capabilities, covering text understanding and multimodal perception. The two new phones truly benefiting from this "domestic brain" are the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra.

These two devices each have their own pedigree. The Galaxy Z Fold8 uses a brand-new 4:3 aspect ratio "wide fold" design, with an 8-inch inner screen, dual 50-megapixel rear cameras, and a built-in 4800mAh battery, completely shedding the narrow aspect ratio of traditional foldable screens, offering a visual and office experience closer to that of a tablet. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is Samsung's first Ultra model in its foldable family, continuing the book-like folding design, equipped with a 200-megapixel main camera and a 5000mAh battery, firmly establishing itself as the pinnacle of foldable flagships.

Running large models directly on the phone means that understanding text and visuals doesn't require sending data back to the cloud every time, resulting in both speed and privacy protection. Facewall Intelligence, founded in Beijing in August 2022, originated from Tsinghua University's Natural Language Processing Laboratory: co-founder and CEO Li Dahai was formerly a partner and CTO of Zhihu; chief scientist Liu Zhiyuan is currently a professor in the Department of Computer Science at Tsinghua University; and CTO Zeng Guoyang, at the age of 22, as the core engineering leader, trained China's first large language model, CPM-1. Now, this on-device model, which originated from Tsinghua, is accompanying Samsung's flagship phones into the pockets of users worldwide.
